Stopping Adani

When it comes to Adani’s mine, Labor and Liberal are two peas in a pod. Neither major party has so far renounced support for the project, and party MPs are still showing support.

The Greens have never given up on stopping this incredibly risky project, and we never will.

As an environmental lawyer and passionate activist, Steph is determined and well placed to make sure we can stop Adani.

IT’S ENVIRONMENTALLY DAMAGING:

Adani Group’s operations could lead to significant environmental degradation. We must protect the places we love, like our spectacular reefs.

We’re with you on:
» Prioritising environment protection over the coal lobby and fighting climate change
» Protecting the Great Barrier Reef and supporting eco-tourism
» Stronger environmental laws to protect the places we love

IT’S A RISKY PROJECT:

Companies around the world are rapidly divesting from coal because they understand the necessary shift to renewables. Even without Adani Group’s involvement, this would be a risky project. It’s only riskier if you look at their history

We’re with you on:
» Zero government funding for the Adani Group’s projects
» Stronger legislation to prevent projects this risky in the future
» A review and / or revocation of Adani Group’s project approvals

IT’S THE RIGHT THING TO DO:

Stopping Adani represents one of the biggest environmental campaigns in recent memory. All around the country, Australians have said “no”. The government wants to ride roughshod over communities and has made it clear they support the project.

We’re with you on:
» Respecting the will of Australians and grassroots campaigning
» Working to Stop Adani in and out of Parliament
» Supporting sustainable industries like tourism and renewable energy

IT’S REALISTIC:

Regardless of what Labor has to say, environmental lawyers agree there are multiple ways that Parliament and political parties could intervene to stop Adani. The Greens support all of the following avenues, and call on Labor to enact one or more methods to Stop Adani.

We’ll make change by:
» Introducing a Bill to parliament as a method of stopping Adani and future risky projects
» Using new evidence from the Great Barrier Reef to trigger a review of Adani’s approvals
» Ending coal exports from the Galilee Basin on environmental grounds
» Lowering investor confidence in the project by highlighting the risks, ruling out support, and encouraging others to do the same

IT’S URGENT:

We don’t have time to waste when it comes to dealing with climate change and contributing factors like coal mining. This mine must not go ahead.

We’re ready and willing to work together to Stop Adani. In 2017, Labor voted down the Greens Bill to do just that. They must commit openly and clearly to stopping Adani. This is not a time for political posturing to win elections.
